Funny Cide, 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Winner, Passes Away at Age 23

It is with a heavy heart that we must report the passing of Funny Cide, the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner. The beloved gelding, who was 23 years old, passed away on April 28th, 2021.

Funny Cide was a beloved figure in the horse racing world. He was foaled in 2000 and was bred by Sackatoga Stable, a group of 10 friends from upstate New York. He was trained by Barclay Tagg and ridden by Jose Santos.

Funny Cide won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in 2003, becoming the first New York-bred horse to win the Triple Crown. He also won the Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Woodward Stakes that same year. He was the first gelding to win the Kentucky Derby since Clyde Van Dusen in 1929.

Funny Cide was retired from racing in 2004 and lived out his days at the Kentucky Horse Park. He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2011.

Funny Cide was a true champion and will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. His legacy will live on in the hearts of horse racing fans everywhere. We offer our deepest condolences to his owners, trainers, and all those who loved him. Rest in peace, Funny Cide.
