The Washington baseball team opened their regional tournament with a bang, defeating Dallas Baptist University 8-2 on Friday night. The Huskies had a strong offensive performance, scoring eight runs on nine hits. Washington was led by catcher Tyler Smith, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
The Huskies got off to a fast start, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Smith drove in the first run of the game with a single to right field, and then scored on a double by designated hitter Joe Wainhouse. Washington added two more runs in the third inning, and then put the game away with a four-run sixth inning.
On the mound, starter Joe DeMers was impressive, going seven innings and allowing just two runs on six hits. He struck out seven batters and walked none. DeMers was backed up by a strong performance from the bullpen, as reliever Nick Kahle threw two scoreless innings to close out the game.
The win was an important one for the Huskies, as it puts them in a good position to advance to the Super Regional round of the NCAA tournament. Washington will face off against Dallas Baptist again on Saturday, with the winner advancing to the Super Regional round.
The Huskies will look to continue their strong play in order to advance to the next round of the tournament. With their offense clicking and their pitching staff performing well, Washington has a good chance of making a deep run in this year’s tournament.
