Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) and driver Christopher Bell have had a successful 2020 NASCAR season, but the team has also had to face tragedy. On October 23rd, JGR lost one of their own when team engineer Eric J. McClure passed away at the age of 42.

McClure had been with JGR since 2006, serving as an engineer on the No. 20 Toyota Camry driven by Bell. He was a beloved member of the team, and his death was a shock to everyone in the NASCAR community.

Bell, who was close to McClure, has been vocal about his grief. “Eric was an incredible person,” Bell said. “He was always so positive and encouraging. He was a great friend and mentor to me. I’m going to miss him so much.”

JGR has also been vocal in their support of Bell and their grief over the loss of McClure. Team owner Joe Gibbs said, “We are all deeply saddened by Eric’s passing. He was an important part of our team and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

Despite the tragedy, JGR is still focused on the championship. Bell is currently in third place in the NASCAR Cup Series standings and is a legitimate contender for the title. The team is determined to honor McClure’s memory by putting forth their best effort in pursuit of the championship.

The team has also created a special decal to honor McClure that will be placed on Bell’s car for the remainder of the season. The decal reads “In Memory of Eric J. McClure” and features a silhouette of his face.

It has been a difficult season for JGR and Bell, but they are determined to honor McClure’s memory by achieving success on the track. The team is focused on the championship and hopes to bring home a title for their fallen teammate.
