The Denver Broncos have reportedly found their replacement for Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback. According to an Associated Press source, the team has chosen Jarrett Stidham to take over the role.
Stidham, who was drafted by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, has been on the Broncos’ radar since the start of the offseason. He was released by the Patriots in April and has been a free agent ever since.
The 24-year-old Auburn product has yet to take a regular season snap in the NFL, but he did show promise in the preseason. In four games, Stidham completed 64.4 percent of his passes for 431 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
Stidham is expected to compete with Drew Lock for the starting job in Denver. Lock, who was selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, started five games last season and threw for 1,020 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions.
It remains to be seen how Stidham will fare in Denver, but he has the potential to be a successful starter in the NFL. He has a strong arm and good accuracy, and he’s also mobile enough to extend plays with his feet.
The Broncos have made it clear that they are looking for a long-term solution at quarterback, and Stidham could be that guy. He’s still relatively young and has plenty of upside, so he could be the answer for Denver moving forward. Time will tell if Stidham can live up to the expectations that come with replacing a future Hall of Famer like Russell Wilson.
