The Idaho Vandals made a statement in their Big Sky Conference opener against the Sacramento State Hornets, winning the game on a last-second 3-pointer from senior guard Trevon Allen. The Vandals, who had been struggling in recent weeks, came out strong and never looked back, leading by as many as 11 points in the first half.

The second half was a different story, however, as the Hornets clawed back and eventually took the lead with just over a minute remaining in the game. With the game on the line, Idaho turned to senior guard Perrion Callandret, who drove to the basket and kicked it out to Allen for the game-winning 3-pointer.

Allen’s shot was the highlight of the night, but it was senior forward Brayon Blake who led the way for Idaho. Blake finished with a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. He also added four assists and two steals. Senior guard Victor Sanders also had a strong performance, finishing with 17 points and four assists.

The win was especially sweet for Idaho head coach Don Verlin, who has been with the program since 2006. It was also a special moment for senior guard Nate Denker, who was honored before the game for his four years of service to the program.

The Vandals will look to build on this win as they travel to face Montana State on Thursday night. With a win, they could take a big step towards securing a spot in the Big Sky Conference tournament.
