Former Storm fan favorite Sami Whitcomb returning to Seattle

Who said you can never go home again?

Certainly not Sami Whitcomb, the former Washington Husky standout who became a fan favorite with the Storm during her first four years in the WNBA.

On Friday morning, the 34-year-old Whitcomb finalized a two-year deal to rejoin the Storm, the team announced. The Ball Out and Girls Talk Sports TV first reported the news.

Whitcomb spent the past two years with the New York Liberty where she averaged 11.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and shot 42.5% on three-pointers as a starter in 2021.

After moving to a backup role last year, the 5-foot-10 shooting guard regressed closer to her career averages and tallied 6.5 points per game, 2.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists while shooting 35.1% on 3s.

During her four-year tenure (2017-20) with the Storm, Whitcomb drew acclaim as a 28-year-old undrafted training camp invitee who took an unconventional route to the WNBA.

As a rookie, Whitcomb mesmerized Storm fans with a 22-points-in-15-minute performance to lead Seattle to an 87-81 comeback in over New York on May 26, 2017.

Due in part to her quick shot release, Whitcomb became a noted three-point specialist and pesky defender off the bench who helped Seattle win WNBA championships in 2018 and 2020.

Whitcomb’s addition is the latest in a massive Storm rebuild that included signing one-time WNBA All-Star point guard Kia Nurse. Seattle is also reportedly nearing a deal with guard Arella Guirantes

The Storm have four-time WNBA All-Star guard Jewell Loyd and center Mercedes Russell under contract. Seattle has extended qualifying offers to center Ezi Magbegor and forward Gabby Williams.
