Emma Maltais’ Short-Handed Goal Leads Toronto to 3-2 Win Over New York in PWHL Home Opener

The Toronto Furies of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) kicked off their home opener with a bang on Saturday, October 5th, as Emma Maltais scored a short-handed goal to lead the Furies to a 3-2 victory over the New York Riveters.

Maltais’ goal came with just over a minute remaining in the third period, and it proved to be the game-winner. The Furies had taken a 2-1 lead earlier in the period on a goal from captain Shiann Darkangelo, but the Riveters tied it up with just over four minutes left in the game.

Maltais’ goal was a thing of beauty, as she took a pass from teammate Nicole Kosta and skated in on a breakaway. She then fired a wrist shot past the Riveters’ goaltender to give the Furies the lead for good.

The win was a big one for the Furies, who are looking to build on last season’s success. They finished second in the PWHL last season and made it all the way to the league finals before falling to the Brampton Thunder.

The Furies will be looking to Maltais to continue her strong play this season. She was one of the team’s top scorers last season, and her short-handed goal on Saturday was a reminder of her offensive prowess.

The Furies will be back in action on Sunday, October 6th, when they take on the Burlington Barracudas. It should be another exciting game, and hopefully Maltais can continue her strong play and help lead the Furies to victory.
