It’s been a tough start to the season for Wesley Yates III, the freshman guard for the University of Washington. Yates was forced to sit out the Huskies’ first two games of the season due to a foot injury.
Yates was expected to be a key contributor for the Huskies this season, but now his status is uncertain. He has been seen wearing a walking boot and has not been able to practice with the team. Head coach Mike Hopkins said that Yates is still day-to-day and that he will be reevaluated in the coming weeks.
The injury is a big blow for the Huskies, who are already without their star guard Jaylen Nowell, who declared for the NBA draft after his sophomore season. Without Yates, the Huskies are thin at the guard position and will have to rely on their younger players to step up in his absence.
Yates was a highly touted recruit coming out of high school and was expected to make an immediate impact for the Huskies. He had a strong showing in the team’s exhibition game against Seattle Pacific, scoring 12 points and dishing out four assists in just 18 minutes of action.
It’s unclear when Yates will be able to return to the court, but the Huskies are hopeful that he will be able to get back on the court soon. Until then, they will have to make do without him and hope that their other guards can pick up the slack in his absence.
