The Portland Timbers defeated the Columbus Crew 3-2 in a thrilling match on Saturday night. The Timbers were led by two goals from fan favorites, Faustino Asprilla and Diego Valeri.
Asprilla opened the scoring in the first half with a stunning strike from outside the box. His shot flew past the Crew goalkeeper and into the back of the net, giving the Timbers a 1-0 lead. Valeri then doubled the lead in the second half with a powerful header from a corner kick.
The Crew fought back and equalized with two goals from Gyasi Zardes and Pedro Santos. However, the Timbers weren’t done yet. In the dying minutes of the match, Diego Chara found Blanco in the box and he calmly slotted home the winner.
The Timbers’ victory was met with great joy from their supporters, who had been waiting for a win since their last match against the LA Galaxy. The win also moved them up to second place in the Western Conference standings, just one point behind leaders Sporting Kansas City.
The Timbers will now look to build on this victory as they face off against Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night. With Asprilla and Blanco in form, the Timbers will be confident of getting another three points.
