It looks like Texas A&M is making a big move in the college football coaching world. According to an AP source, the Aggies are reportedly looking to hire Duke coach Mike Elko as a replacement for Jimbo Fisher.
Elko has been the head coach at Duke since 2017 and has had a successful tenure there. He led the Blue Devils to a bowl game in his first season and has since gone on to post a 20-13 record in three seasons. Elko is known for his defensive prowess and has been credited with turning Duke’s defense into one of the best in the ACC.
Fisher was hired by Texas A&M in 2017 and led the Aggies to a 10-3 record in his first season. However, the team has struggled in recent years, going 8-5 in 2018 and 7-5 in 2019. It appears that the Aggies are looking for a change and Elko could be the perfect fit.
Elko is familiar with the SEC having served as the defensive coordinator at Auburn from 2016-2017 and at Vanderbilt from 2014-2015. He also has experience coaching at Notre Dame and Wake Forest.
It remains to be seen if Elko will accept the offer from Texas A&M, but it looks like the Aggies are making a strong push to bring him on board. If he does accept, he will be joining a program that is looking to make a return to national prominence.
