On Tuesday, Seattle Storm forward Joyner Holmes reflected on returning to her hometown as a professional athlete. The 22-year-old Houston native was drafted by the Storm in the 2021 WNBA Draft and is now set to begin her professional career in her hometown.
Holmes expressed her excitement for the opportunity to play in front of family and friends. “It’s a full-circle moment for me,” Holmes said. “I’m really excited to be able to play in front of my family and friends and to be able to represent my hometown. It’s a dream come true.”
Holmes was a standout at the University of Texas, where she was a two-time All-Big 12 selection and a two-time All-American. She averaged 14.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game during her senior season and was named the Big 12 Player of the Year.
The Storm are hoping that Holmes can bring her winning mentality and skill set to Seattle. She is expected to provide an inside presence for the team, as well as a reliable scoring option. Holmes is also a strong defender, which should help the Storm on that end of the floor.
Holmes is looking forward to the challenge of playing in the WNBA. “I’m just excited to get out there and compete,” she said. “I know it’s going to be a challenge, but I’m ready for it. I’m ready to work hard and do whatever it takes to help my team win.”
Holmes is set to make her debut with the Storm on May 15th against the Chicago Sky. It will be an emotional moment for Holmes, as she returns home to Seattle to begin her professional career. It is sure to be a special moment for both her and the city of Seattle.
