The Seattle Seahawks have made a move to promote two unproven tackles from their practice squad in light of the uncertainty surrounding the injury status of defensive tackle Jarran Reed. The two players, Chad Wheeler and Elijah Nkansah, were signed to the active roster on Tuesday.
Reed, who is currently dealing with a back injury, is considered day-to-day and his status for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams is uncertain. With the team’s depth at the defensive tackle position already thin, the Seahawks decided to add some extra insurance by promoting Wheeler and Nkansah.
Wheeler, who was signed to the practice squad in October, is a former seventh-round pick of the New York Giants in 2017. He has appeared in nine career games, all with the Giants, but has yet to make a start. Nkansah, meanwhile, was signed to the practice squad on October 28th after being released by the Detroit Lions. He was also a seventh-round pick in 2017, but has yet to appear in an NFL game.
The Seahawks are hoping that one or both of these players can step up and provide some depth at the defensive tackle position if Reed is unable to play on Sunday. It remains to be seen how much of an impact they can make, but it’s clear that the team is willing to take a chance on two unproven players in order to ensure they have enough depth at the position.
