It is with great sadness that the sports world has learned of the death of Ryan Mallett, former Arkansas Razorbacks quarterback. Mallett was found dead in an apparent drowning in a lake near his home in Arkansas on Sunday, June 7th, 2020. He was 33 years old.
Mallett was a highly touted prospect coming out of high school and was a four-star recruit. He was a two-time All-SEC selection at Arkansas and was the starting quarterback for the Razorbacks from 2007-2010. During his time at Arkansas, Mallett threw for 7,493 yards and 62 touchdowns. He also led the Razorbacks to the 2010 Sugar Bowl, where they lost to Ohio State.
After college, Mallett was drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He spent two seasons with the Patriots before being traded to the Houston Texans in 2014. He spent three seasons with the Texans before being released in 2017.
Mallett was remembered by many of his former teammates and coaches as a great leader and a fierce competitor. He was known for his strong arm and his ability to make plays when his team needed it most.
The cause of death has not yet been determined, but authorities believe it was an accidental drowning. Mallett is survived by his wife, two children, and many other family members and friends.
