The University of Washington softball program has a long and storied history of success, and two of the most influential figures in the program’s history are current pitcher Ruby Meylan and legendary pitcher Danielle Lawrie. While the two have never met in person, they share a special connection that has helped shape the UW softball program into the powerhouse it is today.
Meylan, a freshman from Vancouver, Washington, has been a major contributor to the Huskies’ success this season. She has posted a 9-4 record with a 2.83 ERA and has been a reliable starter for the team. Meylan’s performance has been especially impressive considering she is only 18 years old.
Lawrie, on the other hand, is one of the most decorated players in UW softball history. She was a three-time All-American and two-time Pac-10 Player of the Year during her time at UW, and she was also the 2009 USA Softball Player of the Year. Lawrie is now an assistant coach at UW and is still heavily involved with the program.
The connection between Meylan and Lawrie goes beyond their shared affiliation with the UW softball program. Meylan grew up watching Lawrie play and was inspired by her success. Meylan even wears the same number (14) that Lawrie wore during her playing days at UW.
Meylan and Lawrie have also developed a relationship over social media, with Lawrie offering words of encouragement to Meylan throughout the season. The two have never met in person, but their connection is undeniable.
