Rory McIlroy made a triumphant return to Quail Hollow on Thursday, shooting a 4-under 68 in the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship. The Northern Irishman, who won the tournament in 2010 and 2015, was in fine form as he carded five birdies and just one bogey to finish the day in a tie for 11th place.
McIlroy was pleased with his performance, saying “It was nice to get back out there and play some competitive golf. I felt like I played really well today and I’m happy with the score.” He added that he was looking forward to the rest of the tournament, saying “I’m feeling confident and I’m looking forward to the next few days.”
Meanwhile, Tommy Fleetwood leads the field after shooting a 7-under 65. The Englishman was in superb form, carding seven birdies and no bogeys to take a one-stroke lead over American Patrick Reed. Fleetwood has been in good form of late, having finished in the top 10 in three of his last four tournaments.
The Wells Fargo Championship is one of the most prestigious events on the PGA Tour and this year’s field is packed with talent. In addition to McIlroy and Fleetwood, other big names include Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson, Justin Rose and Rickie Fowler.
The tournament is sure to be an exciting one and it will be interesting to see if McIlroy can continue his good form and challenge for the title. With Fleetwood at the top of the leaderboard, it looks like it could be a close battle between him and McIlroy for the championship.
