The NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways in Seattle, Washington, saw a thrilling finish in the Funny Car class on Sunday. Ron Capps claimed his third win of the season, edging out Matt Hagan in a close race.
Capps, who drives the NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, was the No. 1 qualifier and started the final round with a .068-second reaction time. He then held off Hagan’s .092-second reaction time to win the race with a 3.913-second elapsed time at 325.14 mph.
This was Capps’ third win of the season and his first at Pacific Raceways since 2013. He now has a total of 53 wins in his career, which ties him with John Force for fourth on the all-time Funny Car wins list.
“It’s been a long time since I won here, so it feels great to get back in the winner’s circle,” said Capps. “I have to thank my team for giving me such a great car all weekend. We had a great starting line advantage in the final and were able to hold off Hagan to get the win.”
Capps’ win was part of a strong weekend for Don Schumacher Racing, as his teammates Jack Beckman and Tommy Johnson Jr. also finished in the top five. Beckman was runner-up in the final round, while Johnson Jr. finished fourth.
The next stop on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule is the NHRA New England Nationals at New England Dragway in Epping, New Hampshire, July 5-7.
