On Tuesday, the Major League Baseball (MLB) announced that the suspension of Ramírez, the Tampa Star Guardians third baseman, for fighting had been reduced from four games to two. The suspension was handed down after Ramírez was involved in a physical altercation with an opposing player during a game last week.
The incident occurred in the bottom of the ninth inning when Ramírez and the opposing player exchanged words and then began to push and shove each other. Both benches cleared and the umpires had to intervene to break up the fight. Ramírez was ejected from the game and subsequently suspended for four games.
However, after further review, MLB decided to reduce the suspension to two games. The league cited the fact that neither player was injured in the altercation and that both players had apologized for their actions.
Ramírez will now serve his two-game suspension immediately. He will miss the next two games against the San Francisco Giants and will be eligible to return to the lineup on Friday when the Guardians take on the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Star Guardians have been struggling as of late, losing six of their last seven games. The team is hoping that Ramírez’s return will help them turn things around and get back on track.
Ramírez has been a key contributor to the team this season, batting .280 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs. He is also a leader in the clubhouse and his presence will be missed during his suspension.
It remains to be seen how the team will fare without Ramírez in the lineup, but one thing is certain: his return will be welcomed with open arms by both his teammates and fans alike.
