The Premier League paid tribute to the memory of Manchester United and England legend Bobby Charlton as both Manchester City and Liverpool secured wins in their respective matches on Sunday.
The former midfielder, who passed away last week at the age of 85, was remembered with a minute’s silence before the kick-off of both games. Players and staff from both teams wore black armbands in honour of the World Cup winner, while a montage of his career highlights was played on the big screens at the Etihad Stadium and Anfield.
Charlton was a key figure in Manchester United’s success in the 1960s and 70s, winning three league titles, one FA Cup and one European Cup. He was also part of the England team that won the World Cup in 1966.
Manchester City secured a 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium, with goals from Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling. Liverpool, meanwhile, beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Anfield thanks to goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.
The wins for both teams were a fitting tribute to Charlton, who was widely respected by fans of all clubs for his achievements on and off the pitch. His legacy will live on for generations to come, and his memory will be honoured for many years to come.
