The Philadelphia Phillies have suffered a major blow with the news that slugger Rhys Hoskins has suffered a left knee injury and has been removed from the field. The injury occurred during a game against the Miami Marlins on August 7th, when Hoskins was attempting to make a diving catch in the outfield.
Hoskins was immediately removed from the game and taken to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. After an MRI, it was determined that Hoskins had suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee. The injury will require surgery and will likely keep Hoskins out of action for at least six weeks.
The loss of Hoskins is a major blow to the Phillies, who are currently in the midst of a tight race for the National League East division title. Hoskins has been one of the team’s most productive players this season, hitting .272 with 16 home runs and 49 RBIs in just over 100 games. His absence will be felt in the lineup, as well as in the field, where he had been playing excellent defense.
The Phillies have not yet announced who will replace Hoskins in the lineup, but it is likely that they will look to one of their younger players to fill in during his absence. The team is also expected to make a move to acquire an outfielder before the trade deadline on August 31st.
The Phillies will certainly miss Hoskins’ presence in the lineup, but they are hopeful that he will make a full recovery and be able to return to action later this season. In the meantime, the team will need to find a way to make up for his absence and remain competitive in the NL East race.
