The Philadelphia Phillies made history on Tuesday night, routing the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-0 in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series. The Phillies’ dominant victory was thanks in large part to the home runs hit by Kyle Schwarber and Justin Turner.
Schwarber got the Phillies off to a hot start with a two-run home run in the first inning. It was his first career postseason home run and it gave the Phillies an early lead they would never relinquish. Turner followed up with a three-run home run in the second inning, which extended the Phillies’ lead to 5-0.
The Phillies’ offense continued to roll from there, as they scored four more runs in the fourth inning and another in the fifth. The Diamondbacks were unable to get anything going offensively, as they managed just two hits in the game.
The Phillies’ pitching was also stellar, as starter Aaron Nola pitched seven shutout innings and allowed just two hits. Relievers Tommy Hunter and Jose Alvarez combined to pitch two scoreless innings to close out the game.
The Phillies’ 10-0 victory was the largest margin of victory in a postseason game since the New York Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles 15-3 in Game 4 of the 1996 American League Championship Series. It was also the first time in franchise history that the Phillies had won a postseason game by 10 or more runs.
The Phillies now lead the best-of-seven series 2-0, and are one win away from advancing to the World Series for the first time since 2009. With Schwarber and Turner leading the way, the Phillies look poised to make a deep run in this year’s postseason.
