It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Paula Murphy, a legendary speed skater and record holder, at the age of 95.
Paula Murphy was born in 1925 in New York City and began speed skating at the age of 11. She quickly rose to prominence in the sport, setting numerous records and winning multiple championships. She was the first woman to break the two-minute barrier in the 500-meter race and held the world record for the 500-meter race for over 10 years.
In addition to her speed skating accomplishments, Paula was also a trailblazer in the sport. She was the first woman to be inducted into the International Skating Union Hall of Fame and the first woman to be named an honorary member of the United States Speedskating Hall of Fame.
Paula was a true inspiration to many, not only for her speed skating achievements, but also for her commitment to excellence and her dedication to the sport. She was an advocate for women’s rights and was an active member of the Women’s Sports Foundation.
Paula Murphy will be remembered as a pioneer in the sport of speed skating and an inspiration to all who knew her. Her legacy will live on through her records, her accomplishments, and her commitment to excellence. She will be greatly missed.
