The San Diego Padres made history on Tuesday night, as they worked together to achieve a combined no-hitter against the Colorado Rockies. The Padres’ Blake Snell was removed from the game in the 8th inning, but his teammates were able to finish the job and secure the no-hitter.
Snell was dominant in his 7 2/3 innings of work, striking out nine batters while allowing only two walks. He was taken out of the game in the 8th inning with a pitch count of 93. Manager Jayce Tingler decided to bring in reliever Mark Melancon to finish the job.
Melancon was up to the task, as he retired the final four batters in order to secure the no-hitter. This marked the first time in Padres’ history that a combined no-hitter has been achieved.
The Padres’ pitching staff has been outstanding this season, and this no-hitter is just another example of their dominance. Snell has been particularly impressive, as he currently leads the league with a 0.96 ERA. His performance on Tuesday night was yet another example of why he is one of the best pitchers in baseball.
The Padres will look to continue their success as they take on the Rockies again on Wednesday night. It will be interesting to see if they can replicate their performance from Tuesday night and secure another no-hitter. Regardless, it was an incredible accomplishment for the Padres and a night that will be remembered for a long time.
