The Oklahoma Sooners made history on Saturday, October 10th, when quarterback Dillon Gabriel set a school record with eight touchdowns in their 59-20 win over West Virginia. The freshman signal caller threw for a career-high 517 yards and eight touchdowns on 33-of-48 passing, breaking the previous school record of seven touchdowns held by former Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray.
Gabriel’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, as he threw for four touchdowns in the first half and four more in the second half. He also connected with five different receivers for touchdowns, including Marvin Mims, Theo Wease Jr., Jeremiah Hall, Austin Stogner, and Drake Stoops.
The Sooners’ offense was firing on all cylinders, as they racked up 686 total yards and scored on nine of their 11 possessions. Gabriel’s performance was the highlight of the night, but the Sooners also got strong performances from running back T.J. Pledger, who rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns, and wide receiver Theo Wease Jr., who had seven receptions for 130 yards and two touchdowns.
The win was Oklahoma’s fourth straight and improved their record to 5-2 on the season. It was also a big win for Gabriel, who has been impressive in his first season as the Sooners’ starting quarterback. He now has 2,091 passing yards and 21 touchdowns on the season, and is proving to be one of the best quarterbacks in the Big 12 Conference.
The Sooners will look to continue their winning streak when they face off against Kansas State next Saturday. With Dillon Gabriel leading the way, Oklahoma looks poised to make a run at the Big 12 title this season.
