The game looked to be heading for extra time, but Monterrey had other ideas. In the 86th minute, Funes Mori scored his second goal of the night to give Monterrey the late lead. The Sounders pushed for an equalizer, but it wasn’t to be as Monterrey held on for the 3-2 win.
The loss was a tough pill to swallow for the Sounders, who had looked so good in the first half. The Sounders will now turn their attention to the MLS regular season, where they will look to build on their strong start.
Monterrey, meanwhile, will move on to the semifinals of the Leagues Cup. They will face Tigres UANL in what should be an exciting matchup.
