Megan Khang is off to a great start in the Portland Classic, leading the field after the first round. The 23-year-old golfer from Massachusetts shot a 7-under 64 on Thursday at Columbia Edgewater Country Club, putting her one stroke ahead of her closest competitor. Khang is looking to make history with a back-to-back win in the Portland Classic, having won the tournament last year.
Khang has had an impressive career so far, having won two tournaments on the Symetra Tour and three on the LPGA Tour. She also has four top-10 finishes in major championships, including a tie for fourth at the 2019 U.S. Women’s Open. Khang is currently ranked No. 41 in the world, and is looking to move up the rankings with a strong performance in Portland.
Khang’s first round was highlighted by eight birdies, including four in a row on the back nine. She also had an eagle on the par-5 13th hole, which helped her take the lead. Khang said she was pleased with her performance, but knows she still has a lot of work to do if she wants to win the tournament.
“I’m really happy with how I played today,” Khang said. “I was able to stay focused and hit some good shots. I know I need to keep that up for the next three rounds if I want to have a chance to win.”
Khang will look to build on her first round performance as she heads into Friday’s second round. If she can continue her strong play, she could become the first golfer to win back-to-back Portland Classics since Annika Sorenstam in 2003. It would be a historic achievement for Khang, and one that could help her climb even higher in the world rankings.
