It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mario Zagallo, one of the most legendary footballers and managers in Brazilian history. He passed away at the age of 92 on August 13th, 2019.
Mario Zagallo was born in Maceio, Brazil in 1927. He began his football career in 1945 with the local team, Clube de Regatas Brasil. He quickly became known for his skill and leadership on the pitch, and was soon signed by Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro. He played for Flamengo for 10 years, winning four state championships and two national championships.
In 1958, Zagallo was called up to the Brazilian national team for the World Cup. He played a key role in Brazil’s victory, scoring a goal in the final match against Sweden. He was also part of the 1962 World Cup-winning team, becoming the first player to win two World Cups.
After retiring from playing, Zagallo went on to become a successful manager. He managed the Brazilian national team from 1966 to 1974, leading them to their third World Cup victory in 1970. He also managed several club teams, including Flamengo and Fluminense.
Mario Zagallo will be remembered as one of the greatest footballers and managers in Brazilian history. His skill, leadership, and passion for the game will be remembered for generations to come. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
