The Seattle Mariners had a tough start to their two-game series against the San Diego Padres, losing the first game 5-2. The Mariners were unable to capitalize on a strong start from starting pitcher Marco Gonzales, who allowed just one run over six innings of work. The Mariners offense was unable to get going, as they were only able to muster two runs on five hits.
The Padres got off to a strong start, scoring three runs in the first inning off of Gonzales. They added another run in the fourth inning and one more in the sixth inning to take a 5-0 lead. The Mariners were able to get on the board in the seventh inning when Kyle Seager drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. They added another run in the ninth inning, but it wasn’t enough as they fell 5-2.
The Mariners were able to bounce back in the second game of the series, winning 3-2. Starting pitcher Yusei Kikuchi was able to keep the Padres offense in check, allowing just two runs over seven innings of work. The Mariners offense was able to get going early, scoring all three of their runs in the first inning.
The Mariners were able to hold on for the 3-2 victory, splitting the two-game series with the Padres. While it was a disappointing start to the series, the Mariners were able to show some resilience and bounce back with a win in the second game.
The Mariners will now look to build off of this split series as they continue their road trip with a four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Mariners will need to continue to play well if they want to keep pace in the competitive AL West division.
