On Tuesday, the Seattle Mariners announced that outfielder Jarred Kelenic had been placed on the 10-day injured list after suffering a foot fracture in a water cooler incident.
The incident occurred during pregame warmups on Monday, when Kelenic was attempting to cool off by dunking his foot in a cooler of cold water. Unfortunately, the cooler was too shallow and Kelenic’s foot hit the bottom, causing a fracture.
Kelenic is expected to miss at least two weeks while he recovers from the injury. This is a major setback for the Mariners, who were hoping to have Kelenic in the lineup for their upcoming series against the Oakland Athletics.
Kelenic is one of the Mariners’ top prospects and was expected to make an impact this season. He was batting .250 with two home runs and four RBIs in the first nine games of the season.
The Mariners have called up outfielder Jake Fraley from Triple-A Tacoma to replace Kelenic on the roster. Fraley is a former second-round pick of the Mariners and has been tearing it up in the minors this season, batting .333 with four home runs and 14 RBIs in just 15 games.
The Mariners will certainly miss Kelenic’s presence in the lineup, but they are hoping that Fraley can step up and fill the void left by his injury. It’s a tough break for Kelenic, but hopefully he’ll be able to make a full recovery and get back on the field soon.
