The Seattle Mariners opened their series against the Detroit Tigers with a 4-3 loss on Tuesday night. Despite a strong start from starting pitcher Marco Gonzales, the Mariners were unable to hold off the Tigers’ late rally.
Gonzales pitched seven strong innings, allowing only two runs on five hits. He was in line for the win until the eighth inning when the Tigers scored two runs off reliever Anthony Bass to take a 3-2 lead. The Mariners were unable to respond in the bottom of the inning and the Tigers held on for the win.
The Mariners had taken an early lead in the game, scoring two runs in the third inning. Kyle Seager drove in the first run with a single and then Dee Gordon scored on a wild pitch. The Mariners had opportunities to add to their lead, but were unable to capitalize.
The Mariners had one last chance to tie the game in the ninth inning when Seager hit a solo home run to make it a 4-3 game. However, the Mariners were unable to score again and the Tigers held on for the win.
The loss was a tough one for the Mariners, who now have a record of 11-14 on the season. They will look to even the series when they face off against the Tigers again on Wednesday night.
