The Los Angeles Lakers suffered a 118-108 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night in LeBron James’ return to his former home. The game marked the first time James had returned to Cleveland since leaving the Cavaliers in 2018.
The Lakers, who were without star forward Anthony Davis due to a sore right ankle, were led by James, who had 25 points and eight assists. However, the Cavaliers had too much firepower for the Lakers, with Kevin Love and Collin Sexton each scoring 24 points.
The Cavaliers got off to a hot start, taking a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lakers managed to cut the deficit to four points at halftime, but the Cavaliers pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Lakers 32-20 in the third quarter.
The Lakers had their chances to make a comeback late in the fourth quarter, but they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. The Cavaliers held on for the win, with Love and Sexton combining for 48 points and 12 rebounds.
James was greeted with a standing ovation from the Cleveland crowd when he was introduced before the game. He also received a video tribute from the Cavaliers during the first quarter. Despite the loss, James said it was an emotional experience to return to Cleveland.
“It was definitely emotional,” James said after the game. “It was great to be back in this building and see some familiar faces. I’m just thankful for the opportunity to come back here and play.”
The loss dropped the Lakers to 28-7 on the season, while the Cavaliers improved to 12-23. The Lakers will look to bounce back on Friday when they take on the New Orleans Pelicans.
