It’s been a tough break for Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. On Tuesday, the team announced that Herbert had undergone surgery on a broken finger on his throwing hand, and will miss the remainder of the season.
Herbert, the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, had been enjoying a stellar rookie season. He had thrown for 3,781 yards and 31 touchdowns, with just 10 interceptions, and had led the Chargers to a 5-9 record. His play had earned him a Pro Bowl selection and had many people talking about him as a potential Rookie of the Year candidate.
Unfortunately, Herbert’s season came to an abrupt end when he suffered the injury during the team’s Week 15 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. After the game, Herbert was seen with a cast on his right hand and it was later revealed that he had suffered a fracture in his index finger.
The Chargers have since placed Herbert on injured reserve, ending his season. The team has not yet announced who will take over as the starting quarterback for the remainder of the season.
While it’s disappointing that Herbert won’t be able to finish out his rookie season, it’s important to remember that he still has a bright future ahead of him. He has shown tremendous poise and talent this year, and with some rest and recovery time, he should be ready to go for the 2021 season.
In the meantime, the Chargers will have to make do without their star rookie quarterback. It won’t be easy, but with a strong supporting cast around him, they should still be able to compete for a playoff spot in 2021.
