The Memphis Grizzlies opened their season in a thrilling fashion, with Ja Morant leading the way. The second-year guard scored 34 points, including a clutch three-pointer with just seconds left in the game, to lead the Grizzlies to a 115-113 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.
Morant was electric throughout the game, shooting 11-for-19 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line. He also added seven assists, four rebounds and three steals. His performance was a reminder of why he was named an All-Star in his rookie season, and why he is expected to be a cornerstone of the Grizzlies’ franchise for years to come.
The Grizzlies were also buoyed by strong performances from Jonas Valanciunas (21 points, 10 rebounds) and Dillon Brooks (20 points). The two combined for 41 points off the bench, helping to offset the absence of Jaren Jackson Jr., who is out for the season with a knee injury.
The Pelicans put up a valiant effort, led by Brandon Ingram’s 30 points and Zion Williamson’s 22 points and 10 rebounds. However, it was not enough to overcome Morant’s heroics.
The win was a great start to the season for the Grizzlies, and a reminder of why Morant is one of the most exciting players in the NBA. He is sure to have many more big performances this season, and it will be exciting to watch him continue to grow as a player.
