It’s been a tumultuous time for the Houston Cougars football program as the team has just announced the termination of head coach Dana Holgorsen after five seasons. According to an Associated Press source, the decision was made by the university’s Board of Regents on Thursday.
Holgorsen was hired in December of 2014 to replace former head coach Tony Levine, who was fired after three seasons. Holgorsen’s tenure at Houston was marked by mixed results, with the team going 30-34 overall and 16-24 in conference play. The Cougars also failed to reach a bowl game in any of Holgorsen’s five seasons.
Despite the lack of success on the field, Holgorsen was able to bring in some top-notch talent, including quarterback D’Eriq King, who transferred from the University of Houston in 2019. King had a breakout season in 2020, throwing for 3,421 yards and 33 touchdowns and rushing for 674 yards and 14 touchdowns.
The Cougars also had some success in recruiting under Holgorsen, signing three four-star recruits in 2020 and two five-star recruits in 2021.
It is unclear who will take over as head coach for the Cougars, but it is likely that the university will look to hire someone with a proven track record of success. Holgorsen leaves Houston with a lot of talent on the roster and a bright future ahead.
