The Iron Sheik was born Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri in Tehran, Iran in 1943. He began his career in amateur wrestling, winning a gold medal in the 1970 World Cup and a bronze medal in the 1974 World Championships. He then transitioned to professional wrestling, joining the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) in 1979.

The Iron Sheik quickly became one of the most popular wrestlers in the WWWF, due to his intense and often violent style of wrestling. He was known for his signature move, the Camel Clutch, which he used to great effect to defeat opponents. He was also renowned for his feuds with other wrestlers, such as Hulk Hogan and Bob Backlund.

In 1984, The Iron Sheik won the WWWF Heavyweight Championship, defeating Hogan in a match that was seen as a major turning point in professional wrestling. He then went on to have a successful career in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), winning the WWF Tag Team Championship with Nikolai Volkoff in 1985.
