On April 9th, 2021, former New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey announced his retirement from Major League Baseball at the age of 34.
Harvey was drafted by the Mets in the first round of the 2010 MLB Draft and made his major league debut in 2012. He quickly became a fan favorite and was dubbed “The Dark Knight of Gotham” due to his impressive performances on the mound. In 2013, he was selected to the All-Star Game and finished fourth in the National League Cy Young Award voting.
Unfortunately, Harvey’s career was derailed by injuries. In 2014, he underwent Tommy John surgery which caused him to miss the entire 2015 season. He returned in 2016 but was never able to regain his pre-injury form. After being traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 2018, Harvey bounced around the league, playing for the Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics, and Kansas City Royals.
Despite his struggles, Harvey remained a fan favorite due to his hard work and determination. He was known for his competitive spirit and willingness to take the ball whenever asked.
Harvey’s retirement marks the end of an era for Mets fans who fondly remember his time in New York. While his career may not have gone as planned, his contributions to the team will not be forgotten. He will always be remembered as a hard worker who gave it his all every time he stepped on the mound.
