It is with great sadness that we report the passing of former England, Tottenham and Barcelona coach Terry Venables. Venables, who was 80 years old, passed away on Friday, April 16th.
Venables was a footballing legend who had a long and successful career in the sport. He began his career as a player in the 1950s, playing for Chelsea, Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers. He then moved into coaching, taking charge of Crystal Palace in 1973. He went on to manage a number of other clubs, including Barcelona, Tottenham and England.
At Barcelona, Venables led the team to the Copa del Rey title in 1985, their first trophy in 11 years. He also took them to the European Cup Winners’ Cup final that same year, where they lost to Dynamo Kiev.
Venables was also in charge of the England national team from 1994 to 1996. During his tenure, England reached the semi-finals of Euro 96, their best performance in a major tournament since the 1966 World Cup.
Venables was a popular figure in the game and will be remembered fondly by football fans all over the world. His death is a great loss to the sport and he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
