When it comes to the Florida Gators football program, changes are afoot. According to an Associated Press source, head coach Billy Napier has dismissed two assistants in order to begin a defensive restructuring.
The two assistants who have been let go are defensive line coach David Turner and cornerbacks coach Charlton Warren. Both have been with the Gators since 2018 and were part of the staff that helped lead the team to a 10-3 record last season.
The move is part of a larger effort by Napier to improve the team’s defense. The Gators have struggled on that side of the ball in recent years, ranking near the bottom of the Southeastern Conference in total defense in 2019. Napier is looking to make changes to help the team improve in that area.
The move also comes at a time when the Gators are looking to make a splash in the upcoming college football season. With the addition of several highly-touted recruits, the team is looking to make a run at the SEC title and possibly even a national championship.
It remains to be seen what other changes Napier will make as he looks to improve the team’s defense. But one thing is for sure: he is not afraid to make tough decisions in order to get the team where it needs to be. With the right moves, the Gators could be a force to be reckoned with in 2020.
