On January 28th, the Washington Commanders made a major move in their coaching staff by hiring Eric Bieniemy as their new offensive coordinator. Bieniemy is a highly respected coach who has been part of the NFL for over two decades. He has served as an assistant coach for the Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, and Kansas City Chiefs.
Bieniemy is a former NFL running back who played for the San Diego Chargers and Cincinnati Bengals from 1991 to 1998. He was a two-time Pro Bowl selection and was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1990s. After his playing career ended, he began his coaching career with the University of Colorado in 2001. He then moved on to become the offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings in 2006.
In his time with the Vikings, Bieniemy helped lead them to two NFC North titles and an appearance in the 2009 NFC Championship game. He then joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011 as their running backs coach and helped them reach the playoffs in 2013. In 2018, he was hired by the Kansas City Chiefs as their offensive coordinator and helped them reach the Super Bowl in 2019.
The Washington Commanders are hoping that Bieniemy can bring his success to their team. He will be tasked with leading an offense that ranked last in the XFL in points scored per game. He will have to find a way to get the most out of quarterback Cardale Jones and wide receiver Rashad Ross, who were both standout players in the league last season.
Bieniemy is a proven winner and has had success at every stop in his coaching career. The Washington Commanders are hoping that he can help turn their team around and make them a contender in the XFL. With Bieniemy at the helm, the Commanders could be a force to be reckoned with in 2020.
