The Cleveland Browns have made a move to bolster their quarterback depth, signing veteran Joe Flacco to the practice squad, according to an Associated Press source.
Flacco, who was released by the New York Jets in August, has been out of football since then. He spent last season with the Denver Broncos, where he started eight games and threw for 1,822 yards and six touchdowns.
The 35-year-old Flacco has a long history in the NFL, having spent 11 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens before joining the Broncos in 2019. He was the Super Bowl MVP in 2013 and has thrown for more than 38,000 yards in his career.
The Browns have been looking for a backup quarterback since starter Baker Mayfield suffered a rib injury in Week 4. Case Keenum has been filling in as the starter, but the team wanted to add another experienced quarterback to the roster.
Flacco is expected to provide a veteran presence in the quarterback room and help mentor Mayfield and the other younger players. He will also be able to provide valuable insight into the Browns’ offense, which is run by head coach Kevin Stefanski.
The signing of Flacco is a smart move by the Browns, as it adds depth and experience to their quarterback room. It also gives them another option should anything happen to Mayfield or Keenum.
It will be interesting to see how Flacco fits into the Browns’ system and whether he can help them make a run at the playoffs this season.
