On Tuesday night, Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie started his 83rd consecutive game, extending his streak of consecutive starts to a new high. Unfortunately, he was forced to exit the game early due to an ankle injury.
Dinwiddie had been a mainstay in the Nets lineup since the start of the season, and his streak of consecutive starts was the longest active streak in the NBA. He had started every game for the Nets since December 4th, 2017, and was on pace to become the first player in Nets history to start every game in a season.
The injury occurred late in the first quarter when Dinwiddie attempted to drive to the basket and rolled his ankle. He was able to walk off the court under his own power, but was unable to return to the game.
The Nets were already without star guard Kyrie Irving, who has been out since February 1st with a shoulder injury. Without Dinwiddie, the Nets were left with only two guards in their rotation, Caris LeVert and Garrett Temple.
The Nets have yet to provide an update on Dinwiddie’s status, but it is likely that he will miss some time with the ankle injury. If he is forced to miss any games, it will be a big blow to the Nets, who are currently in sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
Dinwiddie has been a key contributor for the Nets this season, averaging 20.6 points, 6.8 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game. He has also been one of the most efficient scorers in the NBA, shooting 47.2 percent from the field and 38.8 percent from three-point range.
The Nets will hope that Dinwiddie’s injury is not too serious and that he can return to the lineup soon. Until then, they will need to rely on LeVert and Temple to carry the load in the backcourt.
