The Seattle Seahawks have just signed quarterback Brett Rypien to their practice squad following his start for the Los Angeles Rams. Rypien, who was originally signed by the Denver Broncos in 2019, was released by the Rams earlier this month.
Rypien has been a promising prospect since his college days at Boise State, where he was a three-year starter and set numerous school records. He was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year in 2018 and was a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award, given to the nation’s top quarterback.
Rypien made his NFL debut in Week 4 of the 2020 season when he started for the Rams against the New York Giants. He completed 22 of 38 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions. He was released shortly after the game.
The Seahawks are hoping that Rypien can develop into a reliable backup quarterback behind starter Russell Wilson. Rypien will have the opportunity to learn from Wilson and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who have both been instrumental in helping Wilson become one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
Rypien will also be reunited with former Boise State teammate John Ursua, who is currently on the Seahawks’ practice squad. The two were teammates for three seasons at Boise State and will now have the opportunity to work together again in Seattle.
Rypien is an intriguing prospect and could be a valuable asset to the Seahawks if he can develop into a reliable backup quarterback. He has the potential to be a solid NFL quarterback and could be a great addition to the team’s practice squad.
