It’s been a tumultuous season for Boise State football and it just got worse. On Sunday, the school announced that they had dismissed head coach Andy Avalos after 10 games and four consecutive losses in his third season.
Avalos was hired in January 2018 to replace Bryan Harsin, who left for Auburn. He had a successful first two seasons, leading the Broncos to a 20-5 record, including a 13-1 mark in 2019. But this season, the team has struggled, going 4-6 and losing their last four games.
The team’s offensive struggles have been especially concerning. Boise State ranks near the bottom of the Mountain West Conference in total offense, scoring offense, and passing offense. The defense has also been inconsistent, allowing over 30 points in four of their last five games.
Avalos’ dismissal comes as a surprise to many fans, as he had been widely praised for his work in rebuilding the program. He had also been credited with helping develop quarterback Hank Bachmeier into one of the best in the conference.
The school has yet to name a replacement for Avalos, but it’s likely that they’ll look to find someone who can help get the team back on track. It’s a difficult situation for the Broncos, but hopefully they can find the right person to lead them back to success.
