It was a day to remember for BeachNasa Hataoka on Thursday as she led the field after the first day of the US Women’s Open at Pebble Beach. The 21-year-old Japanese golfer shot a 5-under 66 to take a one-shot lead over American Lexi Thompson and South Korean Sei Young Kim.
Hataoka, who is ranked No. 28 in the world, had a bogey-free round that included five birdies. She was particularly impressive on the par-3 17th hole, where she made an eagle.
“I was very pleased with my play today,” Hataoka said after her round. “I was able to hit the ball well and make some good putts. I’m looking forward to the rest of the tournament.”
Hataoka is no stranger to success on the golf course. She has won three times on the LPGA Tour, including a victory at the 2018 Walmart NW Arkansas Championship. She also has two wins on the Japan LPGA Tour and one win on the Ladies European Tour.
Hataoka is hoping to add a major championship title to her resume this week. She has been close before, finishing tied for fourth at the 2018 ANA Inspiration and tied for sixth at the 2018 Women’s British Open.
“I’m feeling confident,” Hataoka said. “I’m going to try to stay focused and keep playing my best golf.”
Hataoka will have plenty of competition over the next three days. Thompson, Kim, and American Nelly Korda are all within two shots of the lead. There are also several other top players in contention, including world No. 1 Jin Young Ko and defending champion Ariya Jutanugarn.
The US Women’s Open is one of the most prestigious tournaments in women’s golf and Hataoka is looking to make history this week. She has the talent and the confidence to do it, and she will be one to watch as the tournament progresses.
