As we enter the seventh week of the NFL season, it is time to take a look at the red zone efficiency of the 19 teams that are currently in action. The red zone is the area between the 20-yard line and the goal line, and it is where teams have the most success when it comes to scoring points. A team’s success in the red zone can be determined by looking at their touchdown rate, field goal rate, and overall points scored.
The top five teams in terms of red zone efficiency are the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, and Buffalo Bills. The Chiefs have been particularly impressive, scoring touchdowns on 64.7% of their trips to the red zone. The Ravens have been almost as good, scoring touchdowns on 61.5% of their trips. The Saints, Packers, and Bills have all been very successful in the red zone as well, with touchdown rates of 58.3%, 57.1%, and 56.7%, respectively.
At the other end of the spectrum, the bottom five teams in terms of red zone efficiency are the New York Jets, Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos, and Arizona Cardinals. The Jets have been particularly poor in the red zone, scoring touchdowns on just 34.8% of their trips. The Lions have been almost as bad, scoring touchdowns on just 37.5% of their trips. The Chargers, Broncos, and Cardinals have all been relatively unsuccessful in the red zone as well, with touchdown rates of 38.5%, 39.3%, and 40.0%, respectively.
Overall, it is clear that some teams are faring better than others when it comes to red zone efficiency seven weeks into the season. The Chiefs and Ravens have been particularly impressive, while the Jets and Lions have been particularly poor. It will be interesting to see if these trends continue as the season progresses.
