Thriller
The Washington State Cougars women’s basketball team pulled off a major upset on Sunday, defeating the Gonzaga Bulldogs in an overtime thriller. The Cougars, who had been struggling for much of the season, came into the game as heavy underdogs, but they rose to the challenge and put on a show for the home crowd.
The game was back-and-forth all night, with the teams trading leads throughout the first three quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Cougars took control and built a seven-point lead with just over two minutes remaining. However, the Bulldogs would not go away, and they tied the game up with under a minute left.
In overtime, the Cougars were able to take control and pull away for the win. Led by senior guard Chanelle Molina, who scored a game-high 29 points, the Cougars outscored the Bulldogs 11-5 in the extra period. Molina was also clutch from the free throw line, going 8-for-8 in the fourth quarter and overtime.
The win was a huge boost for the Cougars, who had been struggling for much of the season. It was also a big statement win for head coach Kamie Ethridge, who has been trying to turn around the program since she took over in 2018. The win over Gonzaga gives the Cougars some much-needed momentum heading into their final stretch of games.
The Cougars will look to keep their momentum going as they face off against Oregon State on Wednesday. With a win, they could potentially move up in the standings and make a run at an NCAA tournament berth. No matter what happens, Sunday’s win over Gonzaga was a major statement for the Washington State Cougars women’s basketball team.
