The Seattle Seahawks have had a roller coaster of a season so far in 2023. After a promising start, they have stumbled in recent weeks and now find themselves in the middle of the pack in the NFC West. Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times has taken a look at the team’s performance and issued his report card for the first half of the season.
Offense: C+
The Seahawks offense has been inconsistent this season, alternating between explosive performances and lackluster showings. Russell Wilson has been his usual self, throwing for over 2,500 yards and 18 touchdowns, but he’s also been prone to turnovers. The running game has been a mixed bag as well, with Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde combining for over 800 yards but only four touchdowns. The offensive line has been a weak spot, allowing 30 sacks and failing to open up many holes for the running backs.
Defense: B-
The defense has been the bright spot for the Seahawks this season. They’ve been able to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks, recording 33 sacks so far. The secondary has also done well, with Shaquill Griffin and Quinton Dunbar combining for four interceptions and 11 passes defended. The run defense has been solid as well, allowing just over 100 yards per game.
Special Teams: B+
The special teams unit has been a pleasant surprise for the Seahawks this season. Jason Myers has been reliable as ever, converting on 14 of 15 field goal attempts. Michael Dickson has also been solid, averaging over 45 yards per punt. And Tyler Lockett has been a spark plug on kick returns, averaging over 25 yards per return.
Coaching: C+
The coaching staff has had its ups and downs this season. Pete Carroll has done a good job of keeping the team focused despite the recent struggles, but he’s also made some questionable decisions in key moments. The play-calling has also been inconsistent, with the offense often struggling to find a rhythm.
Overall, the Seahawks have had an up-and-down first half of the season. They have shown flashes of brilliance on both sides of the ball, but they have also been plagued by inconsistency and poor decision-making. If they can find some consistency in the second half of the season, they could still make a run at the playoffs.
