The New York Giants are heading to Miami this Sunday to take on the Dolphins, but there is still uncertainty surrounding the availability of star running back Saquon Barkley. Barkley has been dealing with a high ankle sprain since the Giants’ Week 3 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he has yet to practice this week.
Barkley has been a key part of the Giants’ offense this season, leading the team in rushing yards (226) and touchdowns (2). His absence would be a major blow to the Giants’ chances of winning in Miami.
The Giants have been cautious with Barkley’s recovery, as they don’t want to rush him back too soon and risk further injury. Head coach Pat Shurmur has said that the team will wait until the last possible moment before making a decision on Barkley’s availability.
If Barkley is unable to play, the Giants will turn to veteran running back Wayne Gallman to fill in. Gallman has been solid in his limited touches this season, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. He will be tasked with carrying the load if Barkley is unable to go.
The Giants will also have to rely on their passing game more than usual if Barkley is out. Quarterback Eli Manning has been inconsistent this season, but he will need to be at his best if Barkley is unavailable. Wide receivers Sterling Shepard and Golden Tate will be counted on to make plays downfield, while tight end Evan Engram will be a key target in the middle of the field.
It remains to be seen if Saquon Barkley will be able to suit up for Sunday’s game in Miami, but one thing is certain: the Giants will need to be prepared for any scenario. If Barkley is unable to go, they will need to lean on their passing game and Wayne Gallman to pick up the slack.
