The University of Mississippi Rebels pulled off a stunning upset on Saturday night, defeating the No. 13 LSU Tigers 55-49 in a thrilling fourth quarter comeback. The Rebels, ranked No. 20 in the nation, trailed by as many as 13 points in the fourth quarter before mounting a furious rally to take the lead and eventually the win.
The game was a back-and-forth affair throughout, with LSU taking an early lead and maintaining it for much of the game. The Tigers were up by 13 points with just over nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Rebels refused to give up. Led by quarterback Matt Corral, the Rebels scored 21 unanswered points to take a 48-45 lead with just over two minutes left in the game.
Corral was sensational in the fourth quarter, throwing for three touchdowns and running for another. He finished the game with an impressive stat line of 28-for-41 passing for 439 yards and five total touchdowns. His performance earned him SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors.
The Rebels defense also played a key role in the comeback, forcing two crucial turnovers in the fourth quarter that led to touchdowns. The first was an interception by safety Deontay Anderson that set up Corral’s second touchdown pass of the quarter. The second was a fumble recovery by linebacker Jacquez Jones that set up Corral’s third touchdown pass of the quarter.
The win was a huge one for Ole Miss, as it improved their record to 5-3 on the season and kept them alive in the SEC West race. It also marked their first win over a ranked opponent this season and their first win over LSU since 2014.
The Rebels will look to keep their momentum going this Saturday when they face off against Arkansas. If they can pull off another upset, they will be in prime position to make a run at an SEC West title.
