The Cleveland Browns have agreed to re-sign running back Kareem Hunt, according to an Associated Press source. The move comes after the team’s starting running back, Nick Chubb, suffered a knee injury in Week 4 that is expected to keep him out for at least the next few weeks.
Hunt, who was released by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019 following an off-field incident, had been with the Browns since signing with the team in February of 2019. He had been serving an eight-game suspension for the incident, but was allowed to return to the team following Chubb’s injury.
The Browns have been relying heavily on their running game this season, and Hunt’s return will provide a much-needed boost to their offense. Hunt is a versatile back who can be used in both the running and passing game, and his presence should help take some of the pressure off of quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Hunt has been productive during his time with the Browns, averaging 4.8 yards per carry and scoring three touchdowns in 2019. He also has shown an ability to be a reliable receiver out of the backfield, catching 37 passes for 285 yards last season.
The Browns are hoping that Hunt can help them stay competitive in the AFC North while Chubb is out. With Hunt back in the fold, the team should be able to continue to rely on their running game while also giving Mayfield some additional weapons in the passing game.
It remains to be seen how much of an impact Hunt will have on the Browns’ offense, but his return should provide a much-needed boost as they look to stay atop the division standings in Chubb’s absence.
