The University of Washington volleyball team has had a successful nonconference season, finishing with a 9-2 record. The Huskies opened their season with a 3-1 win over the University of Portland and went on to win six of their next seven matches. They then dropped two consecutive matches to Oregon State and Arizona State, but bounced back with wins over UC Irvine and San Diego State.
The Huskies have been led by senior outside hitter Kara Bajema, who has been the team’s most consistent performer. Bajema leads the team in kills (3.96 per set) and is second in digs (2.76 per set). She has also been a force at the net, leading the team in blocks (1.30 per set). Bajema’s leadership has been key to the Huskies’ success this season.
The Huskies have also been buoyed by the play of freshman setter Ella May Powell. Powell has been the team’s primary setter, averaging 9.74 assists per set. She has also been a reliable server, leading the team in aces (0.51 per set). Powell’s steady play has been a big part of the Huskies’ success this season.
The Huskies have also received strong contributions from junior middle blocker Avie Niece and sophomore libero Shayne McPherson. Niece is second on the team in kills (2.97 per set) and leads the team in hitting percentage (.333). McPherson leads the team in digs (3.37 per set) and is second in aces (0.41 per set). Both players have been key contributors for the Huskies this season.
The Huskies have had a strong nonconference season and are now looking forward to Pac-12 play. With Bajema, Powell, Niece, and McPherson leading the way, the Huskies should be a force to be reckoned with in conference play.
